It was the King's reign all over again in Race 2 of Round 2 of the MRF Challenge 2012 at the SIDVIN Festival of Speed at the Buddh International Circuit. This was King's third race win on the trot in the MRF Challenge - a fantastic hat-trick. The starting grid had the top six drivers from Race 1 line up in reverse order on the grid. The drama in the race started on lap 3 when Japanese driver Yuudai Jinkawa's car crashed out spectacularly barrel rolling his car twice before coming to a halt upside-down on the grass run-off area.
Tom Gladdis the driver from Gibraltar ran wide out of turn 1 and in re-joining the circuit on turn 2 he under-steered straight into Jinkawa's car resulting in the crash. That Jinkawa walked away from the crash without so much as a scratch is testimony to the safety of the Dallara designed MRF Formula 2000 cars. The race was red-flagged while the debris was cleared and race distance was reduced from 15 to 12 laps. King who had deftly moved from 6th position on the grid to second, quickly took the lead on restart and kept it for the reminder of the race.
He was followed by Luciano Bacheta in second who was again passed by King after the accident on restart. It was a particularly sweet finish for Alice Powell, one of two female drivers in the race, who took her first podium finish this season. Indian enthusiasts' hopes for a top ten finish were met with Gaurav Gill finishing in 10th place and made up for his first lap retirement in race 1. It was bad luck for Ghorpade who in spite of finishing 7th was handed a 20-second penalty by the stewards for a jump-start which demoted him to 14th. The other Indian finisher was Sureshwaren who finished 12th.
